Greek Independence Day Dancing

25th March was a beautiful, blue-sky-bright-sunshine-day this year for the Greek Independence Day celebrations in Koroni. Often we are parading and dancing through puddles on the seafront and shivering in our Kalamata costumes. This year it was a positively warm and sunny, if a little windy, day. The poor dignitaries on the top table must have been gently poaching as they sat through, first the parade and then several costumed dance performances.

Dancing in the street, in front of Versus cafe, the smallest children started the display, followed by several dance groups of increasing age and size – ending with our group! We were a smallish group this year (eight women and two men) but held our own with our set of dances and it was a really enjoyable occasion, much helped by the lovely weather. As a foreigner here, as always, its a privilege to dance in costume with the group. Many thanks to Gogo Theophanopoulou for the photos of me dancing with the group.
